Ring Sisters’ Engagement To Army Men Told
Sgt. Burns And Cpl. Hughes Grooms Elect
Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ring of Oroville have announced the engagement
of their daughter, Helen, to Sgt. Chester Burns of the Army Air
Corps, and of their daughter, Melba, to Cpl. Richard Hughes of the
U.S. Army. The two sisters are graduates of Oroville High School.
Both were active in Student affairs. Helen attended Yuba Junior
College where she held the office of secretary, and later that of
president, of the Associated Women Students. Since school, the sisters
have worked at the candy store operated by their father. No immediate
plans have been made for the weddings. Burns is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W.W. Burns of San Jose. Several years ago he was stationed
in Oroville with Company H. 53rd Infantry. He and his fiancée met
then. During the past year and a half Burns was in the Alaska Service
Command. He recently returned to the United States on furlough before
transferring to the air corps. Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E.
Hughes, has been serving for the past two years in Australia and
New Guinea. He is a graduate of Oroville schools and was a member
of the Oroville Olives baseball team. Prior to his military service,
he was employed by the California Forestry Service.

“She’d like to call home tonight. Those Long Distance calls mean
a lot to her and the folks. Will you help them get through quicker
by not using Long Distance from 7 to 10 P.M.? Those night-time hours
are about the only time many service men and women have to call.

Two Grandsons Write Rose Ruff After Kwajalein
Mrs. Rose Ruff received letters Monday from her grandsons Pvt. Hal
and S/Sgt. Marvin Dunham informing her that they had come through
the battle of Kwajalein safely. They did not mention their brother,
Mervel, twin of Marvin. The three have been together since their
entry into military service three years ago. They are members of
the 184th Infantry division. Mrs. Ruff said she believed the two
boys had assumed that Marvin had also written. Hal, a machine gunner,
wrote that he had supported the front line landing. Both soldiers
wrote that they were feeling fine but were always hungry after eating
rations.

Axis Gold Loot Brothers Allies
Washington-(U.P.)- The latest Allied economic offensive against
the Germans- designed to preserve for the rightful owners nearly
$1,000,000,000 in gold looted by the Nazis – today posed a difficult
problem for neutral nations still trading with Germany. The formal
statement made plain that the United States, Great Britain and the
Soviet Union henceforth must be fully satisfied that any gold for
sale by a neutral is not the result “of the acquisition of gold
directly or indirectly from the Axis powers.” The Nazis have been
selling to neutrals the gold they looted from the occupied and plundered
countries, thus providing the Axis with an important source of foreign
exchange and enabling it to obtain much needed imports.
(Stu - These countries that did this should have been punished
severely after the War. Why were they not. They were well known,
some went on to be not nice to America.)

Stu’s Notes:
There were a lot of weddings toward the end of WWII and after.
What did they create, Baby Boomers, three that I know are Lynn and
her sisters. Guess what these Baby Boomers are now turning 65, isn’t
Social Security wonderful, Thank you President Roosevelt and others.
Oh, I forgot my three sisters’ whoops not Peggy but Kathy and Betty
are also Baby Boomers. Sadly we lost Kathy a few years ago. It is
hard to believe my baby sister soon can claim Social Security. Don’t
tell her I said so, whoops she reads me, maybe Dan can hide the
Mercury on Friday.
