Officers Seated At Ceremonies
– Officers of the newly formed Arlin Rhine Detachment, Marine
Corps League, were installed in ceremonies held last night at Memorial
Hall. Over 150 persons attended the buffet supper and ceremonies.
Martin Herzog was installed as commandant of the detachment and
Mrs. Ralph Brereton was seated as president of the Marine Corps
League Auxiliary. Other officers installed in ceremonies conducted
by the Chico detachment of the league, included Gene Boehme, senior
vice commandant; Arthur M, Davis, Adjutant; Paul Arnold, chaplain;
Joe Rodgers , judge advocate and Bill Boyet, sergeant at arms.
There are 36 charter members of the detachment and 26 members of
the auxiliary. Among the speakers and guests were Arthur Berger,
national chief Devil Dog of Clements, Calif.: Van W. Dennis, vice
commandant of the California Department, of Sacramento and William
L. Keyes, senior vice commandant of the California Department. Ray
Horgan, captain of the guard of the Chico detachment conducted the
principal business in connection with the installation ceremonies.
Mayor Gerald Meyer of Oroville, delivered the principal address
in which he recalled the heroic war record of Arlin Rhine, who lost
his live on Iwo Jima. The war hero is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
Rhine of Oroville. The road on top of the levee was named Arlin
Rhine Drive in his honor by the city council. Miss Mattie R. Lund
presented the flag to the detachment on behalf of W.E. Sherman Relief
Corps and addressed the group. Plans of activity on behalf of former
Marines were announced including a program of establishing recreation
areas at Folsom and in Tuolumne county; support of a dude ranch
in Tucson, Ariz., where former Marines suffering from respiratory
diseases may go to live, and establishment of a monument in Washington,
D.C., in honor of the battle of Iwo Jima. In addition The
League, with 2000 members now in California, is planning a hospital
near Stockton to aid Marine victims of poliomyelitis. In this connection,
the detachment plans to start a March of Dimes program Dec. 1. The
American Legion, Oroville Post, turned over the hall last night
for the ceremonies after a short meeting of their own Wilton Kister
of Oroville, fourth district commander, American Legion, spoke to
the gathering on behalf of his group.

Stu’s Notes: I think I will go before
the Oroville City Council and see if we could get Arlin Rhine Drive
changed to Arlin Rhine Memorial Drive, it would better
reflect why the levee road was named. Many other Oroville
streets that were named in honor of Oroville Heroes need a Gold
Star on them to let everyone know that they are named for War Heroes.
These men died for their country. Many people that live on
those streets do not know why the street is named as it was.
I tried but I guess not hard enough to get those Gold Star’s placed
on the Street signs, such as Campbell, Morningstar, Worthy, Daryl
Porter Way, etc. But so far have had no luck. The Gold
Star would not affect the address and upon the levee no one lives
up there so who would care if it’s called Arlin Rhine Memorial Drive,
as it will be the street that goes through our upcoming beautiful
Memorial Park. I wonder what became of all those Marines,
I know Chet Ramsey passed on not long ago. If you change all
the streets names in Oroville to honor Oroville’s Heroes, you would
run out of streets before you would run out of names.
