The Aleck Brothers

Photos and information contributed by Marianne Aleck

Marianne's father, Johnny Gus Aleck, and her uncle, Nick Aleck, served in World War Two. They are both buried in the Oroville Cemetery on Feather River Boulevard.

Uncle Nick's rank was Aviation Machinist Mate third Class (AMM3c), V-6. He served on the USS Block Island, and was onboard when it was sunk by a German submarine. He survived the attack, returned home to Oroville and passed away on Dec. 25th 1975.

"This photo of my dad, Johnny, was taken in 1945, probably taken in Germany where he was stationed from about July or Aug. 1945 until his discharge in Nov. 1945. He was a member of the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion. He was very proud of that unit, and lost many of his friends during the "Battle of the Bulge".

It's hard to see, but on his left sleeve above his sergeant stripes is the "Gingerbread", Geronimo insignia. I sure wish we had the original. Don't know what happened to it."
