Sgt. Thomas Lloyd “Bud” Smith Nov. 2, 1946 - Mar. 18, 1968 Durham Born in Fullerton, Calif., Bud Smith moved to Durham with his family in 1951. He attended Chico schools and graduated from Chico Senior High in 1965. While Smith was attending Yuba College, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Ft. Ord for basic training. Smith joined the airborne and trained in Georgia. serving in the 101st Airborne. After his assignment to Vietnam, he was transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division. Smith, a squad leader, was killed while on a search and destroy mission near Tan Yuen. He was originally reported missing in action. His body was escorted home from Vietnam by a long time friend who was also serving there. Chico News & Review, May 26, 1988
